ROUTE 66
“A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent upon arriving.”
America's most famous highway. Route 66 - The Mother Road. Connecting Chicago with Los Angeles and, along the way, generating its myths and romance while inspiring novelists and songwriters to weave its images into their work.
Route 66 has always held a special place in our nation's consciousness, uniquely American, with thousands of stories of hope and heartbreak, love, and new dreams. For me, it was ten days in a red Mustang convertible - slowing down the pace of my life and traveling back to an era void of cell phones, the Internet, and other technological distractions. Back to a time when we could enjoy life's simple pleasures.
Armed with cameras and a roadmap, we traveled from Los Angeles to Amarillo, stopping at four national parks, countless diners, and dives, and even staying one night in a wigwam motel.
Passing through the ghost towns, the dusty road was littered with skeletons of old cars and trucks as our radio blared favorite songs of days gone by. And yes, we sang as if we hadn't a care in the world. In those ten days, we didn't.
